#ad – We were gifted a family stay in return for a review on Mummy Matters. This post was not a requirement.
Nestled in the heart of Gloucestershire near Forest of Dean, Whitemead Forest Park is a woodland retreat that offers something for everyone — from peaceful getaways to family adventures. Our weekend stay in a Woodland Lodge was a nostalgic journey filled with relaxation, connection, and the simple joy of being surrounded by nature.
This wasn’t just a holiday — it was a meaningful return to one of my childhood favourites. And sharing it with my own children made it all the more special.

Childhood Memories Revisited

The Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley has always felt like a second home. From camping trips with my Mum and Grandparents to caravan stays at a holiday park in Ross-on-Wye, the area is packed with cherished memories.
Returning as an adult — and a parent — felt like stepping back in time. Watching Ollie spot an oxbow in the river below Yat Rock was a full-circle moment that reminded me how magical it is to explore nature through a child’s eyes.
Inside Our Woodland Lodge

Our self-catering Woodland Lodge was everything we could have hoped for — spacious, peaceful, and packed with homely touches, it is perfect for families with young children. Tucked beside a babbling stream, it was the perfect setting to unwind and reconnect.
The modern interior featured an en-suite bedroom, a well-equipped kitchen, and a welcoming lounge. Mornings with coffee on the deck and evenings playing board games brought a sense of calm that’s hard to find in everyday life and made our family holiday in beautiful surroundings a memorable one.
Adventures for the Whole Family

There was never a dull moment at Whitemead. Archery and sea scooters in the huge indoor swimming pool were big hits with the kids — thanks to our brilliant instructor Olly, who made everyone feel safe and confident.
Forest walks led to impromptu Pooh stick tournaments, while on-site fun included Adventure Golf, a wooden play area, Giant Draughts, and Connect4. I even managed a gym workout and a blissful spa visit, while Simon and I enjoyed a glass of wine during the Teen Pool Party.
Evenings were a mix of games and giggles with the family, Pub Quiz and Bingo nights.
Food and Drink

The newly refurbished Foresters Bar is a beautiful space, blending nature-inspired design with a cosy, modern feel. With leafy feature walls, soft lighting, and comfortable seating, it’s a great spot for meals any time of day.
Breakfasts were our favourite: Albie couldn’t get enough of the bacon baps, Ollie raved about the sausages, and I devoured my pancakes with maple syrup. Simon tackled the Full English like a pro!
Delicious, satisfying, and served with a smile — the food kept us fuelled for our forest adventures.
Excellent Facilities for All Ages
Whitemead knows how to keep families entertained. From Teddy Bear Making and Junior Baker workshops to Chocolate Parties and Water Walkerz, the schedule was bursting with fun.
There was something for every age and interest — whether your kids love crafts, swimming, or science. And for teens, pool parties and jet skis added a cool twist to the usual holiday activities.
Digital Detox and Family Reconnection
Our final morning was filled with contentment. No screens, no alarms, just laughter over breakfast and gratitude for our time together.
This break was a beautiful reminder that when we unplug, we reconnect in more meaningful ways — through shared experiences, quiet moments, and the joy of just being present.
Final Thoughts

Whitemead Forest Park is more than a holiday destination — it’s a place to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with the people and places that matter most.
If you’re looking for a family escape that blends adventure with tranquility, and offers comfort without losing its rustic charm, Whitemead Forest Park is well worth a visit. We returned feeling refreshed, a little closer as a family, and already planning our next visit.
